July 2001

Calendar of Events

19 August - Columbus Flying Breakfast
OSC will be giving glider rides at the Columbus NE flying breakfast on 19 Aug 2001.   The Pawnee and one of the Blaniks will be there all day so no local flying will occur that day.

Offutt Air Show Update
25,26 August Offutt Air Show
OSC will be flying a Blanik to the Offutt Air Show for static display on August 25 and 26.   We will hand out literature on the club, sell gift certificates, and educate people on the sport of soaring.  If anyone would like to help let Bob Craig know.

Safety Concern

I would like to pass on to everyone a potential safety issue in 99950.
Matt and I were getting ready to launch when Matt noticed teh rudder pedals were stuck in full left deflection.  We pulled the release and investigated and determined the cause.  One of the cable ties on the front seat back had loosened up to the point that the rear seats left rudder pedal got caught in the loop.  We removed the loop fron the rudder pedal and tightened all the cable ties (though the teeth don't seem to be holding well).  These should be replaced as soon as possible with better ties that won't loosen up.  Until then, be sure to check these before each flight.

New Members

OSC gained two members in July.  William Melton is an Air Force pilot flying RC135s.  He also has flown gliders.  Allan Macklem also joined the club.   He is a power pilot with time in Cessnas and Pipers.
Bill and Allan, welcome to the club!

Soaring in July...

OSC flew on 6 days in July.  The longest flight of the month was Rich Nicholson (again) who flew for two hours and fifteen minutes in the 1-26.  Other long flights included Herb Woike in the 1-26 for one hour and 51 minutes, Perry Mitchell in the 1-26 for one hour and 48 minutes, Norm Fuhrmeister in the Blanik for one hour and 16 munutes on a training flight with Bob Craig, and Matt Olsen in the Blanik for one hour 10 minutes on a training flight with Jaime Alexander.
OSC gave 11 introductory flights.  Most of these were for a group of Air cadets visiting the US from Europe to the far East.
